Special episode of Choose or Lose on substance use and addiction among young adults

Seventy-five percent of the 22.8 million Americans addicted to alcohol and other drugs are between the ages of 16 and 29 (National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2002). Yet, people in this age group are underinformed about the negative impact of current drug policies on health outcomes of their age cohort. This grant provides support for the Rock the Vote Education Fund and the Music Television Network (MTV) to produce one episode of Choose or Lose. This 30-minute program framed young people's use of controlled substances as salient to both justice system and public health issues in a forum that was focused on young adults' involvement in the political process. This investment will be considered successful if: (1) a solid portrayal of this public health issue is conveyed to the public; (2) ratings data show substantial audience attention to the program; and (3) Web site hit increases are noted at specific Choose or Lose, RWJF, and Reclaiming Futures Web site domains.
