Measuring the impact of communications technologies on nurses
In the late 1990s, the Veterans Administration implemented two major information systems to enhance record keeping and quality of care. The Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) and Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) were created with the expectation that they would reduce patient care errors and improve the work environment for staff. This grant supports a study that focuses on the effect of CPRS and BCMA on nursing satisfaction, hours worked by nursing staff, and adverse events experienced by patients. The project will be considered successful if the report, which will offer specific recommendations for the development, implementation, and monitoring of new information systems, has a direct effect on decision making related to information technology in the hospital industry.
