Follow-up activities to an expert meeting on ways to accelerate progress on nutrition/food policy

Obesity is such a pressing problem in this country that we cannot afford to wait to implement solutions or to repeat mistakes that have been made on other public health issues if we are to help change the course of this epidemic quickly. In January 2004, the Foundation co-hosted a meeting with the California Endowment to discuss with leaders in public health how to learn from and apply the lessons from public health victories in tobacco, alcohol, traffic safety, and other areas to accelerate progress on addressing obesity. This grant provides support for a follow-up meeting with thought leaders in public health to discuss how to take those lessons and apply them to obesity, with particular emphasis on the leadership and advocacy necessary to accelerate progress. This project will be considered successful if the desired attendees are convened and a report with specific recommendations about how to move forward to build and strengthen the leadership in this field is produced and widely distributed. The California Endowment will co-fund this meeting, which will be held in California.
