Pilot study to increase physical activity among fifth grade students
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that approximately 9 million children are overweight. Physical inactivity has been identified as a significant contributor to the development and maintenance of this problem. Provision of pedometers to children and encouragement to monitor and increase the number of steps they take each day is one strategy to promote more active in-school and out-of-school lifestyles and the environmental changes to support them. This grant to Burnt Chimney Elementary School provides funds for pedometers to raise awareness of opportunities for increased active living among fifth graders, their families, and school personnel, including potentially replicable learning modules that will be integrated into the standard fifth grade curriculum (e.g., mathematics, social studies, science, health, physical education).
