Boston coalition tobacco advocacy project
The Foundation's initiative, Policy Advocacy on Tobacco and Health: An Initiative to Build Capacity in Communities of Color for Tobacco Policy Change, was designed to provide resources for community-based organizations and tribal groups interested in implementing effective tobacco prevention and cessation policy initiatives.Sociedad Latina is the lead agency for collaboration with two other community-based organizations--Hyde Square Task Force and Whittier Street Health Center. The purpose of this project is for the collaborative to work toward the enactment of an expanded tobacco enforcement and licensing program for increased funding for comprehensive tobacco control efforts in Boston. The resulting policies will focus on reducing the impact of tobacco on Boston's low-income communities of color. The project activities include training a cadre of youth activists, building the Policy Advocacy on Tobacco and Health Boston Coalition Tobacco Advocacy Project, and bridging issues of tobacco control to other community development concerns. Youth advocates will wage campaigns to counter tobacco industry marketing practices, increase and enhance existing enforcement activities, and expand public awareness regarding key tobacco policy issues.
