Active Living Network: A cross-sector initiative to promote physical activity and healthy eating
The Active Living Network was launched in 2002 to bring together leaders from the fields and professions responsible for shaping the places where Americans live, work, and play, i.e., the Network is based on the premise that reversing the alarming trends of obesity and related diseases among American children and adults requires upstream environmental and policy approaches that integrate physical activity back into daily life. During its strategic planning work, the Network secured commitments from 36 partners from nonprofit organizations, government, academia, and the private sector with direct communications reaching over 100 million individuals. The Network will continue building demand by recruiting new leaders and engaging existing partners to raise awareness about relationships between the built environment and an active and healthy life. This contract provides bridge funding to expand the development of a three-year strategic action plan to include more school-related and youth-specific targets, continue coalition-building activities, enhancement of the current Web-based resource center, and reconstitute the national advisory committee and special committees for a longer-term effort.
