SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative
The Foundation's SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative® was designed to support development and implementation of comprehensive statewide strategies to reduce tobacco use through education, treatment, and policy initiatives. The American Heart Association, Desert/Mountain Affiliate, has received a grant on behalf of the Wyoming Tobacco-Use Prevention (WyTUP) Coalition. The purpose of this project is to: (1) work on an excise tax campaign with a strategy to mobilize a coalition capable of carrying WyTUP issues statewide and to local coalitions; (2) create a positive image of tobacco control efforts and policies among the public at large and candidates; and (3) engage in direct and grassroots advocacy (using matching funds) during the legislative session to push for the excise tax. Once a tax increase is passed, WyTUP will shift focus to clean indoor air in communities.
