Assessment of the National Walk Our Children to School Day program
While physical activity has been shown to reduce the risk of premature mortality and a host of chronic illnesses, it is known that nearly half of young people between 12 and 21 years of age are not vigorously active on a regular basis. As a result, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has promoted a national physical activity initiative to increase walking among school-aged children. "National Walk Our Children to School Day" began four years ago and continues as an annual event each October. The purpose of this project is to begin to assess that initiative in order to inform the program's evolution and maximize its impact. The potential for a large-scale evaluation will be considered.
