Teen health and media festival to counter inaccurate depictions of tobacco use
Taos Talking Pictures was founded in 1993 as a forum to explore the pervasive influence of the media on our society, particularly youth. Hollywood feature films have increasingly presented smoking as a natural and cool expression of youthful experience. The purpose of this project is to seek out feature films and documentaries that counter the persistent, youth-focused content of films and media glamorizing smoking, drinking, and drugs, and feature them at a film festival in April 2002. The media education programming includes a component that will seek and evaluate documentaries and short films that address the media's influence in youth behavior and decision making related to health issues. The project will be considered successful if 3,000 youth attend the screenings/discussions.
