Providing free legal services to improve the health outcomes of poor children in New York City
The purpose of this project is to increase the availability of free legal services to improve the health outcomes of poor children in New York City. The Volunteers of Legal Service (VOLS) will recruit and coordinate volunteer lawyers providing legal services to poor children and their families in a hospital setting. The Children's Project brings together lawyers, clinical staff, and social workers to work together to meet the legal needs of poor children. Legal assistance initially will begin at New York Presbyterian Hospital with plans to expand to other hospitals. VOLS staff will be responsible for recruiting project sites and volunteer lawyers, training clinical staff at the hospital on legal issues, disseminating information about the project and publishing an article.
