SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative

The Foundation's SmokeLess States: National Tobacco Policy Initiative is a program that supports development and implementation of comprehensive statewide strategies to reduce tobacco use through education, treatment, and policy initiatives. This grant provides support to New Mexicans Concerned About Tobacco (NM-CAT) in order to concentrate efforts on three primary objectives: (1) strategically expand the coalition membership and enhance its organizational infrastructure; (2) increase the tobacco excise tax by $.50; and (3) enact a strong clean indoor air ordinance in Albuquerque, the largest city in the State. NM-CAT will work toward these objectives by: (1) recruiting key, targeted organizations for membership in the coalition; (2) developing effective working relationships with tribal governments; (3) developing and implementing grassroots policy initiatives that build upon the base of support developed during previous campaigns to prevent preemption and secure MSA funding for tobacco control; and (4) developing and implementing related media campaigns.
