Annual conference on culturally competent care

The Foundation's Priority Populations staff team has identified cultural competence in health care as an important approach to improving access to care for racial and ethnic minorities. This grant provides partial support for a conference on cultural competence to be held by UMDNJ and the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School on June 14, 2001. The purpose of the project is to increase understanding about the causes of racial and ethnic disparities in health, to share strategies about providing culturally competent care, and to encourage collaborations among those that are working to reduce disparities. The project will be considered successful if participants (approximately 275) come away with a knowledge of the barriers and disparities faced by racial and ethnic populations, an understanding of culturally competent models of health care, and a knowledge of the diversity that exists within and across racial and ethnic groups.
