Improving online tobacco control information

Presently, the development of tobacco control Internet-based tools is mostly a noncooperative process. This highly individualistic approach prevents the optimization of on-line initiatives and the adoption of better practices. The time is right to start (and keep updating) an inventory of what is available, what is created, and what is lacking in tobacco control Web sites. Philippe Boucher will conduct webwatch surveys that will provide the data to assess the situation and raise the awareness about the specific needs of Internet-based tobacco control projects. The surveys will provide a clearinghouse and the basis for a specific webmasters network. Additionally, they will help the decision makers within the tobacco control community to better understand what the Internet-based tools require to become more effective and cooperative, and how to develop new partnerships. Subsequently, this will result in a more productive use of the Web.
