Internet-based intervention and prevention services addressing health-related problems among youth
This grant provides partial support for TeenCentral, an interactive Web site that provides information and referral for youth who are experiencing or at-risk of developing health-related problems. The site is a forum where adolescents who feel isolated can anonymously discuss their feelings, post personal stories, learn how their peers and youth celebrities overcame similar problems, obtain professional advice, and access local resources. Additionally, site visitors can post questions on-line to a mental health caseworker who responds within 24 hours. Currently, TeenCentral provides information in 15 major content areas, including drugs, alcohol, tobacco, violence, and stress. The site will undertake three major activities with Foundation support: (1) expand the range of topics covered from 15 to approximately 30; (2) continue the site's promotional campaign through television, print, and radio outlets; and (3) work with a research firm to evaluate the effectiveness of the site.
