The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of an education program for families of persons with serious mental illness. Developed and piloted by the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI), the Family-to-Family Education Program seeks to increase family well being, knowledge, and satisfaction with services and decrease the burden and depression that often arises when caring for a family member with serious mental illness. The education program emphasizes peer support of families independent of the patient's involvement in treatment. The program has been well received by state mental health authorities and family participants, but the effectiveness of this program has not been formally evaluated. The findings of this evaluation will be communicated to NAMI and will be published in peer-reviewed journals.
