Conference for governors and their policy advisers on the national tobacco settlement
The National Governors' Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) will host a one-day conference on September 15, 1999, for Governors and their policy advisors to discuss the National Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement (MSA) and its implications for the states. The conference will serve to educate key Governors' staff on: (1) the global impact of the tobacco settlement; (2) the MSA intricacies and various components that will impact state tobacco prevention and control efforts; (3) state revenue and other funding, including tobacco payment levels; and (4) the latest research on successful smoking prevention and cessation programs and how to evaluate their effectiveness. Conference proceedings will be reported in an issue brief published by the end of this year. Also, the NGA Web page will be updated to contain information on best practices in tobacco prevention and control activities at the state and national level.
