Study to evaluate the economic impact of breast-feeding interventions

This grant supports the preparation of a study of the economic impact of breast-feeding interventions. The study will evaluate the benefits of a pre- and post-natal breast-feeding promotion intervention by measuring its impact upon: (1) breast-feeding practices; (2) child and health outcomes; and (3) child health care costs among mother-child dyads. Two Montefiore Medical Center family network centers will serve as study sites. Funds will be used to: (1) gather pilot data from consumers, providers and institutions; (2) gather baseline data on health care utilization and breast-feeding patterns among women prior to delivery and among their infants up to one year; (3) design culturally appropriate pre- and post-natal interventions; and (4) solidify procedures for identifying, recruiting and tracking the target population's mother-child dyads.
