This grant provides support for a conference titled "Socioeconomic Status and Health in Industrial Nations: Social, Psychological and Biological Pathways." The conference, to be conducted in Washington, D.C., in May 1999, under the auspices of the New York Academy of Science, will: (1) examine the data on socioeconomic status (SES) and health and, more broadly, on social ordering and health; (2) explore some of the biological pathways by which SES may influence health; and (3) examine policies that could address the social and health inequalities associated with the SES gradient. Proceedings will be published in the "Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences." Funding will be used to offset the costs of the conference and publication of the proceedings, and represents partial support. Other funders include the MacArthur Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
