Implementation of an outreach program to increase Latino access to health services
The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas.The purpose of this outreach project is to increase Latino access to health services. Going door-to-door in six predominantly Latino housing areas, a team of trained bilingual volunteers and a registered nurse will review vaccination records and screen for diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure and similar health risks. Written information on tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, disease prevention, prenatal care, and alcohol abuse will be distributed and referrals made to local clinics. Center staff will also present information at local daycare centers, schools, and Spanish-speaking churches.
