Wellness and self-improvement program for youth

The Foundation's Local Initiative Funding Partners Program is a matching grants program designed to establish partnerships between the Foundation and local grantmakers in support of innovative, community-based projects that improve health and health care for underserved and vulnerable populations. This grant supports a wellness and self-improvement program that will be expanded to serve students ages 12 to 15 in the greater Los Angeles area. Program leaders use an innovative process to train students to complete a marathon in order to teach them life lessons in goal-setting and discipline. Through their participation, students build self-esteem; improve nutrition; become motivated to avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and illegal drugs; and enhance their overall health. Funding partners include The California Wellness Foundation, the California Community Foundation, and the Crail-Johnson Foundation.
