Health News and Information Programming to a minority population
Radio Bilingue is the only national Spanish-language radio news service in the United States. This grant will continue to support its news and information programming for minority audiences who are isolated by culture, geography, or language from mainstream sources of information. Many Latinos do not have newspapers available to them, or they are illiterate. This project will allow Radio Bilingue reporters to continue their frequent reporting on health issues, supplement funding from other sources for in-depth discussion of health information on "Linea Abierta,"a weekly talk show on health issues, and provide KU-band satellite equipment to expand the number of stations reaching Latinos. When RWJF began its funding, Radio Bilingue programs were carried by 45 U.S. stations. Today there are 65 radio stations that broadcast Satellite Radio Bilingue programming; 27 carry "Linea Abierta," and all 65 carry "Noticiero Latino." The estimated number of listeners to all Radio Bilingue programming is 300,000.
