This project will build on a Foundation staff paper prepared in 1996 that outlined opportunities and dilemmas in the health care field as digital communications technologies increase their capacity and importance. On one hand, they open up opportunities for personal health education, efficient management, and improved diagnosis and treatment of medical problems; on the other hand, they facilitate the spread of faulty advice, create costly redundancies, and threaten the confidentiality of medical records. This project will research the impact and potential of new communications technology on health, identify innovative uses of technology, and help a range of stakeholders understand why this issue is important to their constituencies.
