This program contract supports a "Gordon-type conference" meeting on youth substance abuse and the juvenile justice system. The Spring 1998 meeting will: (1) engage experts in the fields of juvenile justice and youth substance abuse to summarize the most promising current policies, practices and ideas for helping youth with substance abuse problems who come in contact with the juvenile justice system, and (2) produce a report identifying opportunities for improvements in current approaches. This initiative is being sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in collaboration with the Annie E. Casey, Edna McConnell Clark and MacArthur Foundations. The Office of Justice Programs of the United States Department of Justice is also providing funding and expertise to this effort. A small planning committee will be convened to develop the meeting agenda and identify stakeholders and participants to attend. Papers will be commissioned in advance of the meeting to guide deliberations.
