Early intervention for physicians and dentists who misprescribe controlled drugs
This grant will help establish the Vanderbilt Institute for Professional Health, which will provide early intervention services in 10 states throughout the southeastern region of the country for physicians and dentists who are identified as misprescribing controlled drugs. The targeted states include: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The Institute will offer monthly training programs that will be designed as an educational intervention, based on a comprehensive mixture of interpersonal confrontation, self-disclosure, and behavior change strategies that have proved successful with more than 150 physicians. This project, located at Vanderbilt University, will build on and extend the work of Anderson Spickard, M.D., who directed a Continuing Medical Education course for over 10 years for physicians who are found to be misprescribing drugs by the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.
