National initiative to assist parents and preschool teachers to identify learning disabilities in young children

This grant project provides teachers, school administrators, and health providers with better methods and tools to diagnose learning disabilities before children reach the third grade. The National Center for Learning Disabilities, Inc., (NCLD) will distribute Every Child is Learning, a training kit which is designed to help parents and teachers of pre-school children identify the warning signs of learning disabilities, increase parents and teachers' knowledge of early childhood development, and improve their capacity to correctly observe and respond to children's different learning styles. Starting in 1997, NCLD will launch its five-year distribution, technical support, and evaluation plan in ten targeted marketing areas, including New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, Texas, Florida, Illinois, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, and New York. This grant provides one-year, partial support for the dissemination and will cover personnel costs, coordinating meetings of state liaisons, and distribution of training kits in two market states.
