Training of paramedics in the treatment of children with special needs
This grant provides support to develop and test a model program to train paramedics in the on-site assessment and treatment of children with special health needs. These are children with such conditions as severe asthma or seizure disorders who are easily destabilized and who--without prompt on-site intervention--would have to be transported to the hospital. Currently, no program exists anywhere in the country to equip paramedics to manage such children on site, thereby avoiding the stress to the family and the child, as well as the costs of emergency treatment in the hospital. The project will be conducted by the University of Arizona Emergency Medicine Research Center, which since its founding in 1990, has emerged as the leading base in the Southwest for the region wide improvement of Emergency Medical Service systems--particularly the neglected area of Emergency Medical Services for Children.
