Technical assistance and resource center for addressing tobacco in managed care organizations

The Foundation's program, Addressing Tobacco in Health Care, was designed to support efforts to integrate effective tobacco treatment as part of the basic health care provided by managed care organizations. The two key components of the program are: (1) a technical assistance program to help managed care plans implement services based on the best available knowledge in this field; and (2) an evaluation program to test promising implementation approaches. This grant provides funds to the American Association of Health Plans (AAHP) to support the first of these components. Technical assistance activities will involve a range of activities, including: (1) annual surveys of health plans regarding tobacco control efforts; (2) consultation, networking, workshops, and educational materials to help managed care plans identify organizational barriers and implement model programs; (3) a "Benchmarking Awards Program" to identify and promote exemplary tobacco intervention practices; and (4) dissemination efforts to communicate information about exemplary practices, survey findings, and evaluation results, e.g., through a regular newsletter, workshops, and an online electronic network.
