Improving access to health benefits for welfare and low-income families in the South

This grant supports the development of a regional technical assistance effort to improve access to health and other benefits for low-income children and families. The effort will help states and communities respond to the opportunities and challenges presented by the passage of the Welfare Reform Act of 1996. The four major activities of the project are: (1) the development of reports for 16 southern states and the District of Columbia to improve their Medicaid eligibility forms, procedures, and outreach efforts; (2) the development of consumer-friendly brochures and videos regarding health benefits for which low-income families are eligible; (3) the ongoing technical assistance to state agencies and child advocates; and (4) the convening of a regional forum to discuss how states can improve policy and procedures that improve access to benefits for low-income children and families.
