Colleagues in Caring: Regional Collaboratives for Nursing Work Force Development

The Foundation's program, Colleagues in Caring: Collaboratives for Nursing Work Force Development, was designed to support nursing service institutions to initiate concerted work force development systems within their regions.South Dakota Colleagues in Caring, South Dakota State University (College of Nursing), has certain distinct concerns, such as: (1) readily accessible information on the state's health care needs and consumer expectations; (2) an up-to-date, statewide articulation plan for access and mobility within nursing education; (3) a database to predict future nursing workforce needs; (4) knowledge about the most cost-effective use of unlicensed assistive personnel and licensed nurse ratios; and (5) continuing education programs to cross-train current nursing personnel to perform multiple roles in various settings. The consortium intends to accomplish the following: (1) develop a South Dakota statewide nursing work force consortium; (2) assess current and projected nursing care needs in South Dakota, including acute, long-term, primary care, school and public health nursing; (3) develop a system for estimating future nursing care needs in South Dakota; (4) analyze the capacity of the nursing work force in South Dakota; and (5) establish a formal mechanism to keep the South Dakota consortium in place.
