This collaborative project will result in the publication of a special supplement to "Academic Medicine" to advance the teaching of family violence screening, prevention, and intervention in the nation's medical schools. The supplement will be built around three documents that will set the stage for medical education in family violence. These are: (1) A manuscript co-authored by Robert Sege, M.D., Elaine Alpert, M.D., and Ylisabyth Bradshaw, D.O., entitled "Interpersonal Violence and the Education of Physicians," submitted to Academic Medicine. Rather than publish it as a single piece, the editor of Academic Medicine has suggested a "supplement devoted to an overview of the ways in which such programs can be organized and a series of articles on medical programs." (2) The revised report of the March 1994 RWJF-sponsored invitational conference, chaired by Ed Brandt, M.D., Ph.D., which concerned itself with developing cross-disciplinary curricular principles for health professions education in family violence. and (3) A separate RWJF-funded, five-city study, designed to identify issues related to family violence that had not been addressed in the medical education and training of practicing physicians.
