The Foundation's Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program was designed to provide four-year postdoctoral research awards offered to historically disadvantaged physicians who are committed to developing careers in academic medicine, to improving the health of underserved populations, and to furthering the understanding and elimination of health disparities.Sharon A. Austin, M.D., began her fellowship at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in January 1993 and demonstrated satisfactory progress in her investigation of studies of the alternative splice variant of the human insulin receptor gene. This grant was renewed at the same institution. Dr. Austin is now transferring her grant to the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine, to investigate major histocompatibility complex genes and aging under the mentorship of Roy L. Walford, M.D.
