Telephone support service for New Jersey hospital patients

Although the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation became a national philanthropy in 1972 and has operated on a national scale since then, it also has continued funding a limited number of local institutions and projects in the New Brunswick area and throughout New Jersey. It does so in part to honor the legacy of its founder, and in part to recognize the special responsibilities to the communities and the state in which it is located. The purpose of the Long Distance Love Support Network is to strengthen patients' coping capacities through regular dialogue with a person who has shared the same experience. This grant enables patients in New Jersey hospitals to obtain personal support from a willing individual from anywhere in the country who is in the same age cohort as the patient and who has experienced the same illness. The program will be conducted from a central office in New Brunswick and will staff a "hotline" to send callers the names of prospective matches from the program's index of volunteer support persons.
