Generalist Physician Initiative (Phase 1)
The Foundation's Generalist Physician Initiative was designed to challenge schools of medicine--in collaboration with state governments, private insurers, HMOs, hospitals, and community health centers--to increase the supply of generalist physicians. This is 1 of 14 projects funded for a 3-year Phase I implementation grant under the Generalist Physician Initiative. The school is changing the medical school admissions process to attract and admit more students likely to enter primary care by placing priority on characteristics predictive of a generalist career in the selection process. They also plan to expand an early admissions program to include such students. They plan an honors program for selected second semester fourth-year students that would allow them to start their primary care residency program early. This program will not shorten the duration of training but would provide students more opportunities for electives and community-based experiences during residency.
