Practice Sights: State Primary Care Development Strategies

The Foundation's program, Practice Sights: State Primary Care Development Strategies, was designed to challenge states--through collaborations among state agencies, communities, provider groups, and health professionals schools--to improve the distribution of primary care providers in medically underserved areas. The Joint Commission on Health Care of the Virginia General Assembly will work closely in partnership with the State's Area Health Education Center program to develop a comprehensive primary care access plan for the State. The three objectives of the project will be to assess health needs and identify appropriate practice models for three targeted underserved communities, develop recruitment and retention strategies that will lay the groundwork for practice support networks, and examine statewide finance and policy changes to support primary care. The Commission will work in coordination with the Foundation's Generalist Physician Initiative coalition of the State's three medical schools: the University of Virginia, the Medical College of Virginia and the Medical College of Hampton Roads.
