Practice Sights: State Primary Care Development Strategies

The Foundation's program, Practice Sights: State Primary Care Development Strategies, was designed to challenge states--through collaborations among state agencies, communities, provider groups, and health professionals schools--to improve the distribution of primary care providers in medically underserved areas. The Nebraska Department of Health will develop a two-part plan to promote primary care in the State. The Department's staff will provide technical assistance and guide plans for comprehensive health care networks, possibly through preferred provider organizations, in three multi-county, underserved areas. The target communities will be determined according to critical need. In addition, the lead agency will assess primary health care needs for the entire State and work to develop policy changes that will promote the recruitment and retention of primary health care providers. A sophisticated database, combining state and private insurance data, will be used to target underserved populations, assess the supply of health providers and provide analytical data concerning the three multi-county networks.
