Development of an evaluation system for mobility-impaired children
The program, Funding Partnership for People with Disabilities, is a joint program with 18 other private grant makers to foster the integration of people with disabilities into all aspects of American life. This is one of four grants awarded under the Funding Partnership for People with Disabilities. The Foundation participated in a consortium with 18 other private grant makers with the goal of fostering the integration of people with disabilities into all aspects of American life. This project will develop a system and protocols for evaluating the capacity of severely disabled preschool children to operate mechanical wheel chairs and assistive devices. These evaluation instruments will determine: (1) whether a particular child could be cognitively and physically trained to interact with their environment and gain independence with the aid of a wheelchair; and (2) what kinds of mechanical controls children with cognitive and physical limitations can best use for self ambulation. The early assessment and recognition of the capabilities of disabled children, and early initiation of training for the acquisition of motor and cognitive skills may prove crucial to helping them attain independence in adulthood.
