Reducing substance abuse and infectious disease among jail inmates
This grant supports the first phase of a demonstration of a model for assisting jail inmates to reduce their dependence on illegal drugs and alcohol. A collaborative effort among the Montefiore/Rikers Island Health Service; the Hunter College Center on AIDS, Drugs, and Community Health; and community-based organizations in one high-risk New York City neighborhood will provide 165 adolescent and adult female inmates from Rikers Island detention center with a package of services containing: (1) health education and case management while in jail; and (2) continued case management for one year after release back into the community to facilitate ongoing linkage with substance abuse treatment and other needed health and social services, and with informal support networks. If the approach proves feasible, a second phase of the demonstration will be proposed to broaden implementation.
