The Foundation's Faculty Fellowships in Health Care Finance program was designed to permit selected university faculty to enhance their research ability and expertise in the area of health care finance. This project is to study medical practice patterns and outcomes in neonatal intensive care units. Since very low birth weight (VLBW) infants require particularly demanding and costly care, monitoring the efficacy of individual therapeutic maneuvers and the effectiveness of overall management warrants a high priority. The primary objectives are: (1) examine issues of appropriate or optimal diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes for VLBW infants cared for within the neonatal intensive care units of hospitals within the Kaiser Permanente Southern Region Health Care System; and (2) incorporate results into the system's medical quality assurance programs.
