The Foundation's Healthy Future's program was designed to help Southern states reduce their high rate of infant mortality by systematically improving health care for pregnant women and their infants. This grant will provide support for Phase II (years 3 and 4) activities of this project. During the second phase, Oklahoma plans to continue to pursue its objectives to reduce neonatal mortality from 6.1 to 5.0 and post neonatal mortality from 4.2 to 4.0 and to increase the percentage of women receiving prenatal care in the first trimester from 70.6 to 90 percent. Foundation funds will continue to be used to support the area perinatal coordinators who will increase community outreach and coordination efforts (to remove systemic barriers to care) in five rural and two urban areas. State funded strategies include expanding Medicaid coverage, a $1.5-million substance abuse treatment initiative for pregnant women, and a Physicians Liability Committee designed to develop recommendations to improve the malpractice environment.
