Medical day care for handicapped infants
The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas. This project will demonstrate a model for providing comprehensive medical day care to infants and toddlers who are medically involved and physically handicapped. This represents an alternative to long-term hospitalization for these children, which costs as much as $94,000 per child per year. The program, under the direction of a pediatric nurse specialist, will provide comprehensive health, social, and educational services. The objectives are: (1) to make 20 day care slots available, although as many as 30 children may be served if some attend on a part-time basis; and (2) provide ongoing education and support for parents, home visits, and case management.
