Alternative care center for inner-city adolescents
The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas. This project seeks to reduce the dysfunctional behaviors of inner-city youth through the development of a multi-service program for adolescents modeled after The Door in New York City. Project goals are to improve health status and to decrease rates of pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, drug abuse, suicide and destructive behaviors. Services will include primary health care, individual and group mental health services; legal, educational and job counselling; tutorial programs; and recreational activities. The objective is to have an individual treatment program developed and implemented by a primary counsellor for each of roughly 720 teens -- 200 males and 520 females.
