The Continence Project

The Foundation's program, New Jersey Health Initiatives, was designed to support projects in New Jersey that develop new approaches to resolving the state's health care needs, focusing on the Foundation's goal areas. This grant supports a program to reduce incontinence among both community-based and institutionalized elderly clients. The program is built on the successful completion of a pilot project using behavior interventions administered by staff nurses. In its two years of operation, the project's major objectives are to: (1) establish a fully operational continence clinic to serve 450 clients (150 in year one, 300 in year two); (2) develop a formal operations manual and replicate the program in two other settings; and (3) measure and compare costs of treating similar individuals without the specialized continence treatment.
