National in-services training program to improve the patient care skills of school nurses

This grant supports the conduct a regional series of in-service training workshops over the next 3 years that would reach nearly one-third of the nation's 33,000 school nurses. The aim is to strengthen their skills in the clinical assessment and management of the large student population for whom they provide daily first-line care. This project will build on the earlier effort by expanding the school nurse's assessment repertoire beyond history-taking to include assessment and management of the clinical problems which patients most commonly bring to the nurse's office. Priority will be given to nurses from schools in underserved urban and rural neighborhoods.
