The Foundation's Teaching Nursing Home Program
The Foundation's Teaching Nursing Home Program was designed to establish affiliations between schools of nursing and nursing homes in order to improve care for elderly persons with chronic health problems and to provide settings for clinical service, education and service. This grant supports Phase 2 of the Teaching Nursing Home Program at Creighton University. By using a mechanism of dual appointments, nursing faculty will be introduced into the structure of service at the nursing homes. The grantee, a certified home health agency, has developed a "double model" network of two nursing.schools, a nursing home, and a rehabilitation center. With this system, the grantee will: (1) prevent or delay institutionalization of elderly by assessment and counseling; (2)improve patient flow to less intensive care by establishing links with community supports and increasing patient functional levels; (3) improve quality of care by implementing new programs using university faculty and students and gerontological experts to influence the upgrading of expertise and job satisfaction among nursing home personnel through staff development, while effecting a change in curriculum to improve students' attitudes toward a more positive view of care of the aging; and (4) develop appropriate systems of reimbursement for the cost of nursing home care.
