The Foundation's Teaching Nursing Home Program

The Foundation's Teaching Nursing Home Program was designed to establish affiliations between schools of nursing and nursing homes in order to improve care for elderly persons with chronic health problems and to provide settings for clinical service, education and service.By using a mechanism of dual appointments, nursing faculty will be introduced into the structure of service at the nursing home. Consultation services will be developed with faculty serving as nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists. During Phase 2, emphasis will be placed on familiarizing nursing students with gerontology and influencing a career focus in that specialty. Nursing home staff will be encouraged to return to school to earn higher degrees. In support of this effort, a member of the nursing faculty has assumed the role of director of continuing education in the nursing home.
