Follow-up of infants in the Chemung County Home Visitor Demonstration Program

This grant will enable evaluators of the Chemung County Home Visitor Demonstration Program to conduct follow-up examinations of enrolled children up to age three. Located in Elmira, New York, the program is unique -- it is the only rigorously designed field study of the efficacy of home visiting as an intervention to prevent health problems among high-risk mothers and infants.Encouraged by preliminary findings of positive impact on maternal smoking, infant birthweight, and the use of appropriate community services, the Elmira group will extend the follow-up period to look for additional program effects on the children's health and mental development. It is believed that the early findings are significant and warrant an extension of the program's evaluation. This overall effort is central to the Foundation's interest in learning how to reach out and better serve vulnerable populations -- in this instance high-risk mothers and infants.
