I learned about the mission of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to improve the health of the geriatric population while studying in graduate school.
I am currently a geriatric nurse educator who has that personal mission of improving geriatric care by improving nursing education in this specialty. I have developed a licensed practical nurse (LPN) prep course for the national geriatric LPN certified exam. This exam is relatively new, but essential in improving the care of our elders. In most long-term care facilities, it is the LPN who provides the direct care of the resident, administering medications, providing wound care and treatments, and directly supervising the personal care aids.
Many educational efforts have been provided for the registered nurse in geriatrics, but the reality is the need to further develop the bedside nurse to provide even more enhanced care to our elders. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation motivates me and has been essential in my forming my personal mission of improving geriatric care in this manner.
