Following the Supreme Court's landmark Affordable Care Act (ACA) ruling, RWJF President and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, observes that the country is now poised to move ahead on what, for RWJF, is a well-worn road. Our commitment to expanding access and coverage spans decades. But we harbor no illusions that implementation of the ACA will come easily. That road could be bumpy indeed. "The devil," Lavizzo-Mourey notes, "is in the doing."
As we move forward following the ruling, Lavizzo-Mourey says, the Foundation will continue to provide necessary leadership, support, and guidance as states grapple with key provisions of the law, such as the creation of health insurance exchanges, and the expansion of state Medicaid coverage to include the most needy. We will continue to share our knowledge, driving home evidence of the value of prevention.
As always, we will assiduously avoid political battles, but at the same time we will seek to develop and join with leaders who can help get us achieve our goal of better health care and better health. We know that this will be difficult. "Still, that we must do," says Lavizzo-Mourey, "because we already have picked our side—the common good—and there we intend to remain."
