The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation provides funding to the ABIM Foundation to advance the Choosing Wisely® campaign which focuses on reducing the use of unnecessary tests and treatments in U.S. health care. The grants support expansion of the campaign to medical specialty societies, regional health improvement collaboratives, physician organizations and delivery systems. The RWJF grants also support Consumer Reports’ and its role in leading patient education and outreach for Choosing Wisely.

Launched in April 2012, Choosing Wisely encourages physicians and patients to discuss which medical tests and procedures may be unnecessary for their condition, and in some instances, can cause harm. Since then, more than 60 medical specialty societies have created lists of tests or procedures they say are overused or inappropriate in their specialty, and that clinicians and patients should discuss.

Engaging Physicians and Patients in Conversations on Overuse of Medical Tests and Procedures

The ABIM Foundation's Choosing Wisely initiative, through a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant, awarded funding to 21 state medical societies, specialty societies and regional health collaboratives to help physicians and patients engage in conversations aimed at reducing unnecessary tests and procedures.

Let's Work Together

The grantees will work on projects to help educate practicing physicians about the recommendations from the specialty societies and help build physician communication skills to have conversations with patients about the care they need. Grantees will also participate in a learning network that will allow them to learn from one another and enhance the effectiveness of their programs.

Regional Quality Improvement

Aligning Forces for Quality

Five of the regional health collaboratives awarded a Choosing Wisely grant are also Aligning Forces for Quality (AF4Q) alliances. AF4Q is RWJF's signature effort to lift the quality of care in 16 targeted communities.
