Awarded to International AIDS Vaccine Initiative

Vaccines have provided some of the greatest successes in the history of medicine, including the eradication of smallpox and near eradication of polio. But we have not yet experienced the same success with the development of vaccines for global killers like AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other diseases.

We need new approaches to address major gaps in knowledge, leverage recent technological advances and hasten vaccine development.

With support from RWJF, the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is catalyzing a Human Vaccines Project, a collaborative effort that would aim to identify the key scientific problems impeding vaccine development and the resources that might be needed to solve them. In a series of three workshops, representatives from academia, government, industry and nongovernmental organizations will explore the viability of such a project, and its potential to accelerate the development of new vaccines.

Reinventing Discovery

The Human Vaccines Project is part of a larger effort by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to reconsider how medical knowledge is created, and how that knowledge is ultimately deployed to create new treatments, prevent disease and improve health and wellbeing.

Reinventing Discovery projects explore ways to accelerate the pace of medical discovery and influence priorities through new collaborative approaches to scientific research and citizen contribution of insight and data.
